Practitioner Review: Assessment and treatment of body dysmorphic disorder in young people.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a relatively common and highly impairing mental disorder that is strikingly underdiagnosed and undertreated in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). The only clinical guidelines for the management of BDD in youth were published nearly 20 years ago, when empirical knowledge was sparse. Fortunately, there has been a surge in research into BDD over the last 10 years, shedding important insights into the phenomenology, epidemiology, assessment and treatment of the disorder in young people. This review aimed to provide an overview of recent research developments of relevance to clinicians and healthcare policymakers. We summarise key findings regarding the epidemiology of BDD in youth, which indicate that the disorder usually develops during teenage years and affects approximately 2% of adolescents at any one point in time. We provide an overview of aetiological research, highlighting that BDD arises from an interplay between genetic and environmental influences. We then focus on screening and assessment strategies, arguing that these are crucial to promote detection and diagnosis of this under-recognised condition. Additionally, we summarise the recommended treatment approaches for BDD in youth, namely cognitive behaviour therapy with or without selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The review concludes by highlighting key knowledge gaps and priorities for future research including, but not limited to, better understanding aetiological factors, long-term consequences and treatment.

Metacognitive Therapy for Body Dysmorphic Disorder: A Consecutive Case Series

Background:Research suggests that metacognitions could be important in explaining symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), but the effect of metacognitive therapy (MCT) on BDD is unknown.Method:The aim of this consecutive case series was to explore MCT for BDD, delivered individually within a public mental health setting. Treatment was based on MCT manuals for obsessive–compulsive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. Of 11 eligible participants, 2 declined treatment, 8 completed treatment, and 1 dropped out.Results:MCT for BDD was associated with significant reductions in BDD symptoms, comorbid symptoms of depression and anxiety, and metacognitions. All treatment completers were characterized as treatment responders (i.e., >30% improvement), and improvements were maintained at 3-month follow-up.Conclusions:MCT could be a promising treatment for BDD. Future studies should explore MCT for BDD in controlled trials and explore how to motivate individuals with BDD for psychological treatment.

Unmet Needs in Psychodermatology: A Narrative Review.

Psychodermatology, the multidisciplinary field that explores the intricate interplay between the mind and the skin, has gained increasing recognition over the past decade. However, several knowledge gaps and unmet needs persist in the field. The objective of this narrative review was to investigate the unmet needs in the field of psychodermatology as they pertain to medical training, treatment, research, and care access. PubMed was searched from inception through December 2023 to identify articles related to psychodermatology. Findings revealed several unmet needs within the field of psychodermatology. First, there is a need for further investigation into the pathophysiology that links psychological stress to cutaneous disease including the development of novel therapies targeting key neuropeptides. Second, the existing literature focuses primarily on the pharmacologic treatment of body dysmorphic disorder and body-focused repetitive behaviors, as well as delusional parasitosis, for which the first-line agents are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and atypical antipsychotics, respectively. However, additional research into the efficacy and safety of the remaining psychotropic medications and the treatment of other common psychocutaneous diseases is required. Finally, there exists a significant gap in knowledge amongst clinicians tasked with treating psychocutaneous diseases. Dermatologists report low rates of training in psychodermatology and discomfort with prescribing psychotropic medications. In conclusion, increasing resources for dermatologist education on psychotropic agent use, development of new drugs targeting stress-induced skin conditions, and research on the psychocutaneous applications of current medications may greatly improve the quality and access of psychodermatology care.

A Single Case Multimethod Assessment to Detect Significant Changes in the Psychoanalytic Treatment of Psychosomatic Disorders

Mental disorders with body-centered symptoms, such as somatic, eating, and body dysmorphic disorders, present difficulties in psychotherapy because psychological suffering is manifested in the body rather than expressed verbally. The present study illustrates a single case multi-method investigation sensitive to detecting characteristic change manifestations in the treatment of these disorders. We investigated a treatment of a patient with body dysmorphic disorder. Computerized linguistic measures were applied to 86 sessions to assess changes in symbolic processing; out of the 86 sessions, 40 were analyzed to calculate the proportion of speech focused on bodily symptoms versus on relationships. Changes in personality were assessed using the SWAP-200 on nine sessions from different treatment stages. Measures of linguistic style, speech content, and personality showed marked changes over the treatment. The patient manifested schizoid and schizotypal personality traits that decreased over time, along with an increase in personality high-functioning dimension. The patient’s ability to translate his emotional experience into words steadily increased, switching the primary focus of narratives from bodily symptoms to relationships. A multimethod assessment of the treatment of body dysmorphic disorder shows that improvement in personality functioning is accompanied by a shift from a focus on bodily experiences to a focus on relationships.

Psychometric evaluation of the appearance anxiety inventory in adolescents with body dysmorphic disorder

ABSTRACT The Appearance Anxiety Inventory (AAI) is a self-report measure assessing the typical cognitions and behaviours of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Despite its use in research and clinical settings, its psychometric properties have not been evaluated in young people with BDD. We examined the factor structure, reliability, validity, and sensitivity to change of the AAI in 182 youths with BDD (82.9% girls; Mage = 15.56, SD = 1.37) consecutively referred to two specialist outpatient clinics in Stockholm, Sweden (n = 97) and London, England (n = 85). An exploratory factor analysis identified three factors, namely “threat monitoring”, “camouflaging”, and “avoidance”, explaining 48.15% of the variance. The scale showed good internal consistency (McDonalds omega = 0.83) and adequate convergent validity with the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale Modified for Body Dysmorphic Disorder for Adolescents (BDD-YBOCS-A; r s  = 0.42) and the Clinical Global Impression-Severity Scale (r s  = 0.32). Sensitivity to change was adequate, with AAI total scores and individual factor scores significantly decreasing over time in the subgroup of participants receiving multimodal treatment for BDD (n = 79). Change of AAI scores over treatment showed a positive statistically significant moderate-to-good correlation (r = 0.55) with changes in BDD symptom severity, measured by the BDD-YBOCS-A. The study provides empirical support for the use of the AAI in young people with BDD in clinical settings.

Internet-Based Treatment of Body Dysmorphic Disorder: Feasibility, Evaluation, and Self-Report Data.

Initial findings indicate the effectiveness of internet-based interventions for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). In order to substantiate these findings, a seven-module guided internet-based intervention was created and examined. We report the mixed data of participants with clinical and subclinical BDD of the treatment group (n = 18). We investigated the feasibility, the quality of the program content, the design and usability, and its effects on symptom severity and related psychopathology. Adherence to the intervention was low and dropout rate high (55.6%). The program content, perceived website usability, and visual aesthetic were rated high. Credibility and expectancy were on a medium level. Satisfaction with appearance improved significantly in the intention-to-treat analysis (d = 0.58). In sum, symptom-related outcomes and program evaluation showed a positive trend albeit the study conduction was difficult. Future programs should investigate the role of additional motivation strategies and more flexible support addressing the known treatment barriers.

Exercise Adherence and Body Dysmorphic Disorder: Chain Mediating Effect of Appearance-Based Rejection Sensitivity and Social Anxiety

We explored the relationship between exercise adherence and body dysmorphic disorder with a convenience sample of 964 Chinese college students. Participants completed the Scale of Exercise Adherence, the Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale, the Appearance-Based Rejection Sensitivity Scale, and the Body Dysmorphic Disorder Examination Self-Report Scale. Exercise adherence was negatively correlated with body dysmorphic disorder. Appearance-based rejection sensitivity and social anxiety had both independent and chain mediating effects on the relationship between exercise adherence and body dysmorphic disorder. The results have revealed the mechanism of the relationship between exercise adherence and body dysmorphic disorder, and they provide a preliminary basis for studying the causal relationship of these variables. Our findings also provide a theoretical basis for the intervention and treatment of body dysmorphic disorder.

Appearance-related safety behaviors predict symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder following internet-based treatment

Recent experimental evidence has found that appearance related safety behaviors (i.e., practices meant to avoid a perceived feared outcome) likely play a crucial role in maintaining symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). The present study sought to determine if these behaviors predicted BDD symptom severity following treatment. Participants (N = 50) with BDD were randomized to either eight sessions of interpretation bias modification or progressive muscle relaxation. Both treatments led to reductions in BDD symptom severity and appearance-related safety behaviors, though moderate levels of safety behaviors persisted at both posttreatment and follow-up. Importantly, post-treatment appearance related safety behaviors significantly predicted BDD symptom severity at three-month follow-up. Taken together, the present findings suggest appearance related safety behaviors maintain BDD symptoms following effective computerized treatments and provide further evidence for their importance in the treatment of BDD.

Time to Response in Therapy for Body Dysmorphic Disorder: A Comparison of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Supportive Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy has been shown to be effective for individuals with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD); however, time to treatment response for different treatments have not yet been examined. We randomized 120 patients to either weekly cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or supportive psychotherapy (SPT) at two academic medical research centers. In this secondary data analysis, we aimed to determine the time to first response (30% or greater reduction in BDD symptom severity) in both treatment conditions among those who attended at least one post-baseline assessment (n = 109). As previously reported, CBT for BDD was associated with more consistent improvement in symptom severity and quality of life than SPT. In a pooled analysis combining both sites, the median time to first response was shorter for CBT (76 days [10.9 weeks], 95% CI: 76-107 days) than for SPT (88 days [12.6 weeks], 95% CI: 88–nonestimable days; Χ2df=1 = 3.85, p = .0498). For CBT, the estimated 75th percentile response times were 148 days [21.1 weeks] at site 1 and 134 days [19.1 weeks] at site 2. Response times were not estimable for SPT at either site because the response rate was too low. Thus, therapy clients seeking treatment for BDD and clinicians should be aware that an initial treatment response requires more than 11 therapy sessions for the majority of clients, and that 21 or even more sessions may be required. Treatment response is likely to occur earlier with CBT for BDD (the first-line therapy for BDD) than with supportive psychotherapy.

Development and evaluation of an acceptance-facilitating intervention for an internet-based cognitive behavioral self-esteem training for adults with body dysmorphic symptoms

BackgroundVarious barriers contribute to low treatment rates in Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). While internet-based intervention is considered a low-threshold option and shows efficacy, studies report acceptance deficits. We first tested predictors of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology for acceptance and secondly evaluated an acceptance-facilitating intervention for an internet-based self-esteem training addressed to individuals with BDD symptoms. MethodWe randomly assigned 110 participants with distinct BDD symptoms to a 6-min animated whiteboard video (n = 50) or a waiting control group (n = 60) before offering them internet-based training. ResultsAcceptance was good before the intervention (87% with moderate/high scores). Performance expectancy, social influence and slightly effort expectancy predicted baseline acceptance (R2 = 0.70). The acceptance-facilitating intervention led to greater improvements of performance expectancy and facilitating conditions compared to the control group. Higher self-reported acceptance was associated with training uptake and higher adherence. DiscussionIn particular, performance expectancy, but also social influence seemed to be valid predictors of acceptance of web-based BDD treatment. The results suggest that a specifically designed, brief video improves acceptance-facilitating factors. Subject to review, the potential benefit of an acceptance-facilitating intervention may be to enhance treatment rates in BDD.

Cost-effectiveness of internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy for body dysmorphic disorder: Results from a randomised controlled trial

ObjectivesTo evaluate the cost-effectiveness of internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD-NET). DesignSecondary cost-effectiveness analysis from a randomised controlled trial on BDD-NET versus online supportive psychotherapy. SettingAcademic medical center. ParticipantsSelf-referred adult participants with a primary diagnosis of body dysmorphic disorder and a score of 20 or higher on the modified Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale for BDD (n = 94). Patients receiving concurrent psychotropic drug treatment were included if the dose had been stable for at least two months. InterventionsParticipants received either BDD-NET (n = 47) or online supportive psychotherapy (n = 47) for 12 weeks. Primary and secondary outcome measuresThe primary outcome measures were cost-effectiveness and cost-utility from a societal perspective, using remission status from a diagnostic interview and quality-adjusted life years (QALY), respectively. Secondary outcome measures were cost-effectiveness and cost-utility from a health care perspective and the clinic's perspective. ResultsCompared to supportive psychotherapy, BDD-NET produced one additional remission for an average societal cost of $4132. The cost-utility analysis showed that BDD-NET generated one QALY to an average cost of $14,319 from a societal perspective. ConclusionsBDD-NET is a cost-effective treatment for body dysmorphic disorder, compared to online supportive psychotherapy. The efficacy and cost-effectiveness of BDD-NET should next be directly compared to in-person cognitive behaviour therapy. Trial registrationNCT02010619.

Mechanisms of cognitive behavioral therapy vs. supportive psychotherapy in body dysmorphic disorder: An exploratory mediation analysis

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is common, severe, and often chronic. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the first-line psychosocial treatment for BDD, with well-established efficacy. However, some patients do not improve with CBT, and little is known about how CBT confers its effects. Neurocognitive processes have been implicated in the etiology and maintenance of BDD and are targeted by CBT-BDD treatment components. Yet, the malleability of these factors in BDD, and their potential role in mediating symptom improvement, are not well understood. Understanding how treatment works could help optimize treatment outcomes. In this secondary data analysis of a randomized clinical trial of CBT vs. supportive psychotherapy (SPT) in BDD (n = 120), we examined whether treatment-related changes in detail processing (Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure test), maladaptive appearance beliefs (Appearance Schemas Inventory-Revised), and emotion recognition (Emotion Recognition Task) mediated treatment outcome. All constructs improved over time and were associated with symptom improvement. CBT was associated with greater improvements in maladaptive beliefs than SPT. None of the variables examined mediated symptom improvement. Findings suggest that with successful treatment, individuals with BDD demonstrate reduced neurocognitive deficits (detail processing, emotion recognition, maladaptive beliefs) and that CBT is more likely than SPT to improve maladaptive appearance beliefs. More work is needed to understand mechanisms of change and thus maximize treatment outcomes.

Cognitive-affective reactions to a non-judgmental and judgmental mirror gazing task in individuals with body dysmorphic concerns

Background and objectivesThe look into the mirror represents a typical trigger situation for people with body dysmorphic concerns. Mirror exposure on the other hand is commonly used in the treatment of Body Dysmorphic Disorder even though little is known about its precise effects. This study aimed to investigate cognitive-affective processes related to mirror gazing. MethodsA total of 125 individuals (screening for body dysmorphic concerns: NBDD+ = 56, negative NBDD- = 69) participated in a laboratory study using a guided 10-min mirror gazing task. Participants were randomized to one of two experimental conditions, a non-judgmental and judgmental description of the own body during mirror gazing. Distress, self-hostile cognitions and post-event processing were assessed after the task and at follow-up. ResultsParticipants with body dysmorphic concerns showed higher values regarding subjective appearance distortion, stress induced by the exposure, distress, self-hostile cognitions and post-event processing compared to the symptom negative group. The two conditions did not yield differential effects. LimitationsThe short duration of the mirror gazing and the only internal description of the body may have contributed to a missing effect for the approach. ConclusionsThe results indicate the importance of cognitive and affective processes in reaction to mirror exposure. They support the cognitive model of BDD and suggest post-event processing as a relevant factor requiring further investigation in future research.

Psychedelic therapy for body dysmorphic disorder

Abstract In this opinion piece we propose the investigation of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy for the treatment of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). BDD is a psychiatric disorder characterised by appearance-based preoccupations and accompanying compulsions. While safe and effective treatments for BDD exist, non-response and relapse rates remain high. Therefore, there is a need to investigate promising new treatment options for this highly debilitating condition. Preliminary evidence suggests safety, feasibility, and potential efficacy of psychedelic treatments in disorders that share similar psychopathological mechanisms with BDD. Drawing on this evidence, as well as on relevant qualitative reports and theoretical proposals, we argue that it would be worthwhile to conduct a phase 2a study aimed at assessing the safety and feasibility of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy in BDD. We also offer some suggestions for how future research ought to proceed.

Body dysmorphic disorder treatment: about a clinical case

IntroductionBody dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a relatively common disorder characterized by a preoccupation with non-existent or slight defects in appearance. It was first described in 1886 by Morselli as dysmorphophobia.ObjectivesThis work reviews the current available data on BDD and its treatment options and describes a clinical case that reports an improvement in symptomatology after surgery.MethodsNon-systematic review of the literature with selection of scientific articles published in the past 10 years; by searching Pubmed and Medscape databases using the combination of MeSH descriptors. The following MeSH terms were used: “body dysmorphic disorder”, “dysmorphophobia”. Clinical file consultation.ResultsThe usual treatment involves a combination of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. Antidepressant medication, mainly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have been used. If the symptoms do not improve, a different SSRI can be considered or clomipramine, venlafaxine or second-generation antipsychotics can be useful.ConclusionsThe role of surgery remains controversial, several studies indicating that the symptoms typically worsen after an aesthetic procedure because the preoccupation shifts to a different body area. However a recent study reported 32 of the 41 patients that underwent surgery were highly satisfied with the outcome. In our clinical case, our patient, a 20-year-old female with non-delusional dysmorphic ideas about her nose initiated treatment with paroxetine with poor response and was, against medical opinion, submitted to a rhinoplasty. Three weeks after the surgery there was an improvement in preoccupation about her nose. More research should be made to clarify the role of surgery in this disorder that often lacks adequate therapeutical response.DisclosureNo significant relationships.

Video Conferencing Dysmorphia: Assessment of Pandemic-Related Body Dysmorphia and Implications for the Post-lockdown Era.

Background: The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to global effects on human interaction and mental health. The most drastic changes are seen in ways people continue to stay connected with each other. Video-conferencing applications like Zoom gained popularity and have become the primary means of communication for social or work events and meetings. These applications have also in many places replaced face-to-face healthcare visits and have penetrated school-based learning. The long-term implications of this digital technology on self-esteem and body image require further study.Main Body: Video-conferencing applications have led to people being more conscious of their appearance and this has resulted in increased cases of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). There is increased focus on body appearance and cosmetic procedures to fix minor defects. Although the treatment for BDD is like depression, it requires the personalization of therapy specific to the needs of the patient.Conclusion: In this review, we aim to highlight the impact of the pandemic on body image and the long-term implications of virtual conferencing. The review also highlights available pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment approaches in the management of body dysmorphic disorder related to virtual video conferencing.

Brain functional correlates of emotional face processing in body dysmorphic disorder

Previous neuroimaging studies in body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) have focused on discordances in visual processing systems. However, little is known about brain functional aberrations in individuals with BDD during emotional face processing. An fMRI paradigm with negative emotional faces was employed in 20 individuals with BDD and 43 mentally healthy controls (HC). We compared functional activity and whole-brain connectivity patterns of the amygdala and the fusiform gyrus (FFG) between both groups. Regression analyses were performed for associations of body dysmorphic symptoms with brain activity and connectivity. Individuals with BDD exhibited higher activity in the left amygdala compared to HC (pFWE = .04) as well as increased functional connectivity of the left amygdala with a network including frontostriatal and temporal regions (pFWE < .05). The FFG revealed increased functional connectivity in individuals with BDD, mapping to brain areas such as the cingulate cortex and temporo-limbic regions (pFWE < .05). In HC, higher levels of body dysmorphic symptoms were associated with higher functional amygdala and FFG activity (pFWE < .05). Individuals with BDD show aberrant functional activity and connectivity patterns within the amygdala and the FFG for negative emotional face processing. Body dysmorphic symptoms in HC are associated with a mild pattern of brain functional alterations, which could emphasize the relevance of a dimensional approach in addition to diagnosis. Treatments for BDD could benefit from targeting visual misperception and evaluation processes upon confrontation with emotional information.

Mechanisms of cognitive-behavioral therapy effects on symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder: a network intervention analysis.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a severe and undertreated condition. Although cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the first-line psychosocial treatment for this common disorder, how the intervention works is insufficiently understood. Specific pathways have been hypothesized, but only one small study has examined the precise nature of treatment effects of CBT, and no prior study has examined the effects of supportive psychotherapy (SPT). This study re-examined a large trial (n = 120) comparing CBT to SPT for BDD. Network intervention analyses were used to explore symptom-level data across time. We computed mixed graphical models at multiple time points to examine relative differences in direct and indirect effects of the two interventions. In the resulting networks, CBT and SPT appeared to differentially target certain symptoms. The largest differences included CBT increasing efforts to disengage from and restructure unhelpful thoughts and resist BDD rituals, while SPT was directly related to improvement in BDD-related insight. Additionally, the time course of differences aligned with the intended targets of CBT; cognitive effects emerged first and behavioral effects second, paralleling cognitive restructuring in earlier sessions and the emphasis on exposure and ritual prevention in later sessions. Differences in favor of CBT were most consistent for behavioral targets. CBT and SPT primarily affected different symptoms. To improve patient care, the field needs a better understanding of how and when BDD treatments and treatment components succeed. Considering patient experiences at the symptom level and over time can aid in refining or reorganizing treatments to better fit patient needs.

Psychosocial issues and body dysmorphic disorder in aesthetics: Review and debate

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a serious and debilitating psychiatric condition that disproportionately presents in dermatologic and cosmetic surgery patients. BDD is currently underrecognized in cosmetic medical settings and is thought to be underdiagnosed by behavioral health professionals. The significant comorbidities associated with this disorder, as well as potential harm done to both patient and physician, raise ethical and medicolegal concerns regarding its treatment. Although cosmetic interventions have historically been discouraged in BDD, recent studies have provided controversial evidence of benefit in certain cohorts. The rise of “snapchat dysmorphia” and the proposed explanatory phenomenon of perception drift have generated further debate around the de novo development or unmasking of BDD. We critically review and summarize existing debates around the treatment of BDD in cosmetic medicine. We provide guidance for screening, clinical interviewing, and the provision of psychoeducation in cases of suspected BDD.

Evaluation of a specialist service model for treating body dysmorphic disorder (BDD): application of National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence Guidelines for BDD (NICE, 2006)

AimsBody dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is still poorly recognised with a dearth of research into treatment. The OCD/BDD Service (South West London St. George's Mental Health NHS Trust) is a specialist service offering treatment for BDD using the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) stepped care model for BDD as a basis for service provision.This is the only known study to date to evaluate the implementation of the NICE guidelines recommended treatment for BDD in clinical practice. Furthermore, a sample of patients and clinicians were interviewed to elicit their evaluation of treatment.MethodA total of 48 patients with a primary diagnosis of BDD who were offered treatment between 2006 and 2018 were identified. Questionnaires routinely completed at time of assessment were Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale for BDD (YBOCS-BDD); Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS); Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS). Assessments were conducted by clinicians with expertise in BDD. Clinical data including risks and sociodemographic information were collated and analysed. Data were examined with intention to treat analysis. Thematic Analysis (TA) was used to analyse data from semi-structured interviews conducted with ten clinical staff and seven patients regarding their experiences of treatment. Qualitative data were coded and themes identified.ResultClinical data at assessment indicated impaired functioning plus high risks and substance misuse. There was a higher percentage of females (58%); average duration of BDD was 19.23 years. Clinical outcomes indicated significant improvements in the total sample from baseline on measures of BDD, depression and functioning (p = 0.001). Patients described their progress in terms of living skills, social interactions and quality of life. The main themes identified included the significance of the therapeutic relationship expressed by both patients and clinicians; the lack of early intervention and knowledge of BDD in healthcare.ConclusionCurrent recommendations for treating BDD were found to be beneficial overall. However, there are patients who are non-responders and including experiences of patients’ and clinicians’ perspectives provided valuable insights into other options for treatment which are lacking and could enhance current recommendations where CBT and medication have not enabled progress. The young onset age with long duration, highlights the need for developing awareness of BDD so that it is not a hidden disorder.
